I have always loved Halloween. I like the pumpkins and fall leaves, the dark stories and scary movies, the fun costumes and spooky decorations. But Halloween is even more fun now that I have an excuse to enjoy it: kids.
Now that I have two little monsters to celebrate it, my favorite holiday (well, tied with Christmas) is even better. Here's why:
1. I get their candy. I have a sweet tooth. I don't eat that much candy on a regular basis, nor do I let the kids to have it regularly. But who can resist chocolate, and there's plenty of that this time of year. Plus, since the kids shouldn't have too much, I really have to get rid of some it for their own good.
2. I get to go trick-or-treating. I have always loved trick-or-treating. Being out with everyone else all dressed up in costumes, everyone greeting you with candy at the neighborhood houses and (in Astoria) stores. I actually love the whole trick-or-treating in stores in Astoria. It adds a real sense of community to this Halloween tradition.
3. I get an excuse to dress up. I actually think I may have dressed up every Halloween...Even as an adult, I usually attended some party or another or just even wore a costume to work. As I said, I really like Halloween. I don't like to wear anything crazy - I prefer to go classic and generally stick to old standards like a witch, vampire, or fairy. But now that I have kids, I feel that it is perfectly acceptable for me to be in costume.
4. I have a reason to make Halloween treats. I recently hosted a Halloween party for some of my kids' friends and their parents. I had so much creating an array of spooky snacks and treats - cheese and pretzel broomsticks, clementine pumpkins, fudge stripe witch hats, Halloween shaped sandwiches, and frozen hand punch. Yes, I suppose I could make these things for an adult Halloween party, but they seem much more fitting with kids around.
5. I can share the joy of one of my favorite times of year with my two favorite people. I love their excitement at picking out their own costumes (Nate has been obsessed with Star Wars lately and Willa was determined to be an owl for some reason. Nate tried to convince her to be Princess Leah and she said adamantly, "Willa be hoo-hoo, not princess!") I love watching their wonder at all the spooky decorations in the neighborhood. I love that Halloween fun is something we all enjoy.
So bring on the spooky and let the Halloween festivities begin!
